Does Instagram Remove EXIF Data?

What Instagram strips, and when

When you upload a photo to Instagram, the platform re-encodes and re-compresses it to fit its delivery pipeline — different sizes for feed, Stories, and thumbnails, all served from a CDN. That re-encoding process discards the original EXIF block as a byproduct, which is why a photo downloaded back off Instagram will show no camera model, no timestamp, and no GPS data no matter what the original file contained. The important nuance is timing. EXIF removal happens during Instagram's processing pipeline, which means the upload itself transmits your unmodified original file, metadata and all, to Instagram's servers first. If your threat model is "what will other Instagram users see," the platform has you covered. If your threat model includes what Instagram, Meta, or anyone with server-side access might see or retain, EXIF stripping on the public-facing copy doesn't change what was uploaded.

What still gets through

Direct Messages have not always been held to the same stripping guarantees as public posts, since some DM code paths handle files differently than the main feed pipeline. If you're sending a sensitive photo privately rather than posting it, don't assume the same automatic protection applies.
